The Evolution Of Texas Hold'em
Texas Holdem is without doubt the most popular poker game in the world today, due largely to the ever increasing fame of the most prestigious of all poker tournaments, The World Series of Poker which sees players from all over the world make an annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas to compete in a gruelling Texas Holdem event where the winner walks away with the internationally recognised gold bracelet and title of World Poker Champion.
But where did Texas Holdem originate from? There is much speculation as to the origins of the game, however, it is widely believed that as the name would suggest, the earliest version of Texas Holdem was played in Robstown, Texas in the early 1900s.
The game is then said to have been introduced into the casinos of Las Vegas by a few Texan card players including the likes of Doyle Brunson and Amarillo Slim. The game of Texas Holdem then started to gain popularity in the 70s which is when the famous Benny Binion accepted a challenge which saw the birth of the World Series of Poker.
After maintaining a steady gain in popularity throughout the 20th century, Texas Holdems status as the leading poker game began to surge in the 2000s, largely due to its new found exposure on television and the internet. As the frequency and popularity of televised tournaments grew, so did the popularity of Texas Holdem which subsequently became a part of mainstream television. It is often speculated why Texas Holdem should outrank any other card game in terms of popularity, however, because each player starts with only two cards and the remaining cards in play are shared between all the players at the table, the game is very strategic. Players are not only passionate about playing Texas Holdem itself, but there is also a high demand for the ever increasing literature and educational resources that can be obtained to help improve a players skill.
